LASIK Surgery Procedure: Step by StepPosted on: April 29, 2019 | Lasik Eye Surgery
The LASIK procedure process is fast and simple, so we’re going to take you through each step for a better understanding of what really goes on during laser eye surgery. Whether you are receiving LASIK to correct farsightedness and astigmatism, or nearsightedness, laser vision correction is sure to vastly improve your quality of life. We will be taking you through the process of what would be your LASIK surgery procedure, step by step.
The preliminary process before getting to the actual procedure includes your eye doctor’s approval for surgery, as well as a consultation with your LASIK surgeon. When choosing a reputable LASIK surgeon, you will want to go with someone who comes from a trustworthy vision institute with the right certifications. Remember, any good surgeon will ensure that LASIK eye surgery is right for you before proceeding. After you are approved for surgery, you then decide how you will pay for the procedure. Once financials are decided, the only thing left to do is pick a date for the procedure and schedule a ride for someone to drop you off and pick you up after your procedure. In total, the actual procedure lasts just 10 – 15 minutes.
Fun Fact: LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis
Step 1: Numbing Eye Drops
The first step in a LASIK vision procedure is to apply numbing eye drops. This ensures that the small laser incisions cannot be felt.
Step 2: Creating the Flap
To access the cornea, the surgeon creates a thin flap with a precision instrument. This flap in the cornea is created to keep a buffer between the part of the cornea that will need to heal and outside debris and bacteria.
Step 3: Reshaping the Cornea
After the flap is created, your surgeon will use an excimer laser to reshape your cornea. This is done by removing small amounts of tissue from your cornea. The new shape of the cornea allows different refractions to occur, thus resulting in clear vision.
Step 4: Sealing the Corneal Flap
Once your surgeon has reshaped your cornea, the flap previously created is sealed. This thin flap will quickly begin to heal just hours after surgery.
Step 5: Wait 24 Hours
After surgery, you will be given sunglasses to shield your sensitive eyes from light. You will need someone to drive you home after your procedure. While it will take some time for your eyes to adjust to the light, your recovery period is quick and simple. Within 24 hours or less, you will be ready to resume everyday activities.
