What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. Laser vision correction is a procedure that has been performed over 20 million times worldwide since 1995. In fact, over 1 million people in the United States have laser vision correction every year, and at Mattioli Vision Professionals, a Houston LASIK vision center, we’ve helped over 50,000 Houstonians with our advanced laser procedures. The procedure itself is quite simple. With an advanced femtosecond laser or a microkeratome blade, we create a thin flap in the cornea of your eye. After completion, this flap is folded back and an excimer laser is then used to alter certain areas of the corneal tissue. Once the flap is placed back, the newly formed corneal tissue will be able to properly refocus light without the need for prescription eyeglasses or contacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I'm a candidate?
There are quite a bit of circumstances that can affect your candidacy for LASIK eye surgery. Although, keep in mind that over 95% of people who wear glasses and/or contacts are eligible for corrective eye surgery.

What is the treatment like?
It is performed using eye drop anesthetics. You lie on the laser bed and stare at the central target light. You can blink anytime you want, just stare straight. You may feel some pressure for 10-20 seconds and/or cold eye drops placed periodically, but that’s about it.

How long does the procedure take?
A procedure typically lasts only 10-15 minutes.

Can both eyes be done at the same time?
Yes. If both eyes need treatment, it’s usually done at the same time.

How soon can I see?
Most will notice some improvement as soon as the treatment is complete. Although, your vision will still be foggy and you will require a driver to make it home. In most cases, a patient’s vision will greatly improve the next day and will be capable of driving.

When can I go back to work?
Typically by the next day for most occupations.

When can I wear makeup again?
Generally by the third day with careful application and removal of any products used around the eyes.

What else should I know?
Dr. Mattioli is trained and certified in multiple technologies and procedures enabling you to receive the best treatment and outcome. Many people who were told that they are not candidates for LASIK may now be able to receive even better procedures for their situation.
