What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a vision problem that occurs when the lens of the eye (cornea) is abnormally shaped. The cornea is the outermost part of the eye that is responsible for about 75% of the eye’s total focusing power. So, when there is an issue with the cornea, vision problems generally develop.

What causes astigmatism?

Astigmatism is caused by an irregularity shaped lens, which prevents light from focusing properly on the back of the eye (retina). Doctors don’t really understand what causes this abnormality, but genetics tends to be a contributing factor. In many cases, astigmatism is present at birth. In others, it develops later in adulthood due to advanced age, eye disease, or injury.

Who is at risk of getting astigmatism?

Astigmatism can occur in adults and children of varying ages. But factors that can increase the risk of developing astigmatism include:

  • A family history of eye disorders or vision problems
  • Trauma or injury to the eye
  • Thinning of the cornea
  • Refractive errors, like farsightedness and nearsightedness
  • Eye surgery, resulting in scarring

Symptoms of astigmatism in adults

The most common signs and symptoms of astigmatism in adults include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Poor night vision (nyctalopia)
  • Chronic squinting
  • Eyestrain
  • Frequent headaches

These concerns will vary from person to person and, in some cases, may not present at all. This is why keeping up with routine eye exams is essential for monitoring healthy vision.

How to correct astigmatism

At Mattioli Vision Professionals in Houston, TX, we offer a wide range of treatments for astigmatism. Traditionally, mild to moderate cases of astigmatism could only be improved with corrective eyewear, like glasses or contacts. Today, thanks to innovative technology and advancements in eye care, laser eye surgery can be used to correct astigmatism. This method also offers long-lasting results to prevent the dependency on temporary solutions, like corrective lenses.

Does astigmatism get worse with age?

Generally, astigmatism tends to get worse with age. This isn’t always the case, as each person is different, but routine eye exams should be done to monitor your condition. Other eye issues can also contribute to severe astigmatism, which is why your vision should be assessed on a regular basis.
